I just called SPCA.LA in Long Beach for rescources for a stray kitten I have been fostering. I was told by friends that they would be able to take this kitten. The lady who answered, my god, had the worst attitude. She was extremely argumentative with me over the phone. Once I asked my question if they could take him, she clearly said that they were not an intake shelter. So I asked if she knew of rescues or no-kill shelters and she proceeded to tell me of a kill shelter. When I told her I didn’t want to send the kitten to this shelter she said “I can’t help you” but with the grossest attitude towards me. Like don’t be working phones if you’re going to be rude.

I recently found four abandoned kittens near my house and looked up the closest animal shelter. This one came up as the nearest option, but unfortunately, my experience was very gross and disappointing. When I arrived, I was immediately interrogated instead of offered help.

They refused to take the kittens because I found them in a neighboring city, even though the shelter is just minutes from that area. Despite Long Beach being nine times larger than Cerritos, they wouldn’t accept the kittens based on this technicality. It was frustrating to see the focus on bureaucratic rules that have no way of being verified rather than the welfare of the animals.

What was even more sickening was the feeling that my race influenced how I was treated and after reading other reviews, i see that I’m not the only person of color who has had a similar experience.

It’s beyond gross that such a toxic attitude exists at a place that’s supposed to prioritize helping animals.

After trying at several shelters in the area as well as some rescues, we finally had success at PD Pitchford. The animals appear to be well cared for and treated very well. The staff is friendly and helpful and don't judge you for having a job and wanting to have a dog in your family. we are absolutely in love with our sweet little 105lb beast, we couldn't have asked for a better companion, they did some basic training while he was in their care that has gotten us off to a great start/

We adopted our sally girl from here a little over a year ago. The process was fast. We were able to take her home a week later after she was spayed. We absolutely adore her. She is the best cat ever. Thank you. 🖤🖤🖤

Me and my fiancé went here to try to an adopt a puppy for our daughter and just because I’m African American and my fiancé is Latino I felt like we were frowned upon the receptionist was making faces at us and basically denied us because we have a dog that’s not spayed and she automatically assumed that we were not responsible people and wouldn’t bring the puppy back to be spayed which we would have without a problem. They have nice dogs here but the workers are unprofessional, judgemental and racist i would not recommend for my fellow black and brown people.

We were actually headed to see a dog at the animal shelter, but that dog was in foster care. After looking at dogs at both the shelter and SPCA, I was asking Ariana at the front desk of SPCA about their dogs. She suggested a German Shepherd and told us about her. If Ariana hadn't mentioned "Archie", we would never had thought to inquire about this sweet , lovable,mellow dog. Sage and Irene brought us in the pen to get to know Archie and tell us more about her. Before leaving, we visited their petshop to bring home dog food, toys and supplies right there on the campus. It was convenient for us and theborofits go back to the care of the animals. It is beyond evident that everyone at this facility loves and cares for these animals! From our first interaction to follow up texts and emails, I would highly recommend visiting this SPCA!

My son attended the Friends for Life summer camp last summer and I highly recommend it! He learned about animal welfare and behavior, working with animals, and the importance of kindness and compassion. He loved going everyday. The staff were great with the kids. It was a very worthwhile experience.

I loved this place, i adopted a cat from here in 2017 and remember it as a friendly and welcoming place. this all changed in the last few years though, the employees and volunteers no longer seem to want you there or even to adopt their animals. i felt totally iced out from the entire staff when i was seriously trying to adopt another cat. all of these animals deserve homes just as much as the rest of the animals in this world, but the facility that is providing these animals with their temporary home doesn't seem to want people to meet them. i would not tell anyone to not go here if you're adopting a pet, because all pets deserve love and the right fit for you might be here, but if you do go here prepare to have to ask three different people and sign multiple documents just to meet a cat face to face. it's a long process, as adopting a pet should be, but it does not need to be that long. also, side note but probably not the best place to adopt a dog. it's really great for cats, but the dog area just smells so awful it's almost impossible to be in if you have a functioning nose.
