UMD is an excellent place to work. You really have an opportunity to be of service. All of the people I have worked with care about the guests and helping others. The volunteers are AWESOME.

Went to prepare / serve food for the holidays. The kitchen was nice and spacious. With some guidance, we prepared for about 200 - 225 people. Not sure how many came to eat, as I had to leave early. If you have the time, please volunteer to help them!

A prison-type atmosphere with pat-downs/ 2 locked doors at entry. Hostility to requests for meds as prescribed,; nebulizer use; even to requests for clean bedding + clean laundry. No bottled water available regularly. No assistance with transport.or housing. I was bullied, got very sick + fled. Dirty place. I felt bad for the children.
Don't recommend

The dinning room staff need to be replaced! They are extremely rude and uncaring! They are aware that they are dealing with the homeless and they still have nasty attitudes. A dark skinned Africa American woman wearing glasses with Box Braids is rude everyday. Even when she is in the back washing dishes she still manages to voice how rude she is. This Saturday (today) she pushed the lunch plate in my hand while handing it to me. While they harass people that simply come in, eat and leave out they should watch the restroom more often and stop men from entering the ladies bathroom! To be going through difficult times and have to deal with this staff is just sad! So I have to decide on being sad and harassed or hungry. It's just unbelievable!

I was grateful for the stay, but there are some drawbacks. First, you can only stay for 1 month, so a lot of people just end up on the street. I just used it as a stepping stone to a shelter where I could stay longer and obtain work again.. Secondly, some of the kitchen staff are not kind. I am both gluten and dairy free, and heard more than once with glares, “…this is a homeless shelter” when trying to simply eat a meal! But, there are some kind people in the kitchen and some of the staff would make sure I had enough fruit for my diabetes. Despite the drawbacks, my case manager was a kind one. Also, they have you go during the day as it is not 24 hours, but there is a library basically across the street…

I would never tell ANYONE to reach out to this place for anything. I was treated with major disrespect, I was discriminated against because of my race. Their website states they offer help for homelessness, employment, medical and dental appointments, even assistance in acquiring a birth certificate and social security card. They have a homeless shelter and they also have a motel that they have 40 rooms for 40 homeless people/families while on the list to get section 8 housing. I was on the list for 3 months..I called every week and finally while at my Rock bottom and 30 degrees outside they xalled and said I had a place at the hotel. I went there. I never caused one issue. I didn't bother a soul, if I was there, I stayed in my room and followed every rule they had. I kept my room immaculate. That is after I had to bomb the room twice and keep a can of raid handy..it was infested with roaches...whe. I say infested...I've never ever seen anything like it. I was thankful though and didn't complain. I immediately tried to start getting the services they offered however I had absolutely no luck. After 3 months of staying there, I was told I couldn't stay there any longer, that I didn't qualify anymore because my family was not there. Mind you I was single the whole time and so were almost 100% of the residents. This happened after I started complaining about the drug use and drug selling all day and night outside. Also complained about the very loud music played by a resident and client of theirs sometimes until 7 in the morning. I also reported that the staff that worked on the grounds had knowledge of everything and did nothing but gave me the boot. I left there worse than when I came. Without receiving any services at all. I should've gotten my section 8 vouchers after 3 months. After After made me leave I was no longer on the list.
The staff were rude, prejudice, not professional at all, and dishonest. I would love to see this place replaced with an agency that actually cares and does what they say
I would rate then a ZERO BUT HAD TO GIVE ATLEAST ONE.
