I wandered into SEACC one day, not knowing that I was about to become a soldier in the eternal battle between good and the not-so-good. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was volunteering to save the world. The trees, the salmon, the entire ecosystem—all of it, on my watch. And what a curious little army they have assembled, these conservationists. They’ve got the passion of revolutionaries, the stamina of marathon runners, and just enough cynicism to keep things interesting.

‘Save the planet,’ they said, as if it were as simple as remembering to floss. But here’s the kicker: they do it. They really do. They protect things—important things—that most of us didn’t even know we needed until they were almost gone.

And you know what? In this absurd little existence of ours, where everything seems to be crumbling and nothing makes sense, it’s oddly comforting to know that there are still people out there who believe in saving the world, even if it’s just one tree at a time.
