They were supposed to help me after a water incident caused a huge hole in my ceiling and damage in my house. They sent inspectors out and told me I was approved for all the repairs. Then the person that I was working with whose name was Lee I guess got a promotion and some new guy named Anthony took over my account. Despite calling multiple times trying to get updates they simply never did the work and stopped responding. I finally managed to get a hold of someone and they blamed it on Medicaid and said that my grant expired. When I called Medicaid they said that it was Mountain housing opportunities fault and that they were the ones that dropped the ball. All that I know is my house is not been fixed and I still have a giant hole in my ceiling and water damage in my walls and nobody cares and it doesn't matter if I get told I'm approved, I guess nobody's fixing it.

My son went through their down-payment assistance program about 4 years ago. They loaned him 15k. I kept asking what the terms of the loan were and never got a straight answer other than if he sold his home he would have to pay the money back (obviously). They also said that after so many years it would be interest free. Okay, great.
He sells his home to buy another because his family has grown out of that particular home and the HOA where he lived was horrible (another story entirety). At closing he finds out that he owes them 25k!! 10k more than he borrowed FOUR years ago!! Talk about a program that wants to hold and keep people down!
When something seems too good to be true IT IS!! Don't even bother with this program. It's a waste of time!! Had we known this, I would have borrowed the money for his down-payment out of the equity in my house! I would have NEVER encouraged him to accept this loan!
And if I could have given ZERO stars, please believe I would have.

Kindness. Honesty. Hard Working. Those are all words that I think of when I think of this organization. From the front desk staff who takes your calls, to Lee who oversees each case, to Devon, Billy and the rest who actually do the manual labor I CANNOT say enough good things about them. The amount of work these people do is nothing short of amazing.
I want to personally thank from the bottom of my heart each and everyone of them. Lee did a fantastic job with my case. His kindness and non judgment will be remembered
And DEVON! My Lord, that young man worked his hands to the bone on my house. He was under alot of stress in his personal life, but he didn't let that stop him. He did an AMAZING JOB! Do not hesitate to call these fine people. They are there to help in as many ways possible. They are herefor the people of western NC

So, from my understanding, most people who are low income, most likely, don't have decent credit. So... are you into helping people... or helping the system that created debt? Hmmm... I agree with the gent below... what is your purpose?
It does indeed seem like a racket.
So, what are people with no credit history, but have kids, and are in dire situations? What is your solution for them? Tell them to just buck up, get some credit and then you will help them?
What about immediate needs? just let them be homeless, and feel that degradation... guess I am confused.
Help me understand. Please. Who are you helping and what about those with bad credit?
How about you house them, and make the credit and financial education a part of the rules to help them.

I was so excited when I heard about mountain housing opportunities. I had heard great things and I saw online where they had a lot of properties and sounded relatively easy to apply. And it was very easy to apply and I was approved for one bedroom apartment but after that approval I've been on a waiting list for over 2 years I've never updated on anything about it I've called several times to make sure that I'm still on the wait list they don't look me up they just say you're always on the wait list once you're on it you never have to redo it well I'm not buying it. I think people probably have got an apartment after they applied after I did and I'm sitting here in a run-down trailer in woodfin and have been sitting in this place for 2 years because they told me I had qualified I thought that meant I had the apartment I looked at all but no the day before I was supposed to move there they told me oh no you just qualified financially but you're on a waitlist till I had less than 24 hours to find this trailer that I moved to and here I sit and have been ever since so no they're following up sucks the weightless is ridiculous you never hear back from them you have to pay a separate fee every time you apply at a different property unless you do it all on the same day or something like that it's all ridiculous gave me a lot of Hope and then just jerked it out from under me. Don't waste your time. This organization sucks because they don't have enough organization they need to follow up with waitlist call people with them know what's going on after you apply it an apartment that apartment manager needs to call you let you know what's happening with her wait list every waitlist is different for each one of their properties is absolutely chaos at mountain housing opportunities.

If you can acquire another type of loan to purchase your house, it would be my recommendation to DO SO. My credit score has always been good. And I could have gotten a different loan instead of utilizing this program and come out WAY better I'm the end. When I spoke with Mike this morning when I got the closing disclosure on my house, it was over DOUBLE what the initial down payment assistance was to begin with. When I inquired about this from Mike, he said that not only am I NOT the only one that was surprised come their closing time, but that he had paperwork drew up that explianed. But see, the problem with that is that is not at all how it was explained to me when I signed the paperwork. The PILE of paperwork that I was to sign, and that "explanation" was probably at the bottom of the pile and I was just instructed to sign. I urge anyone that is thinking about utilizing the establishment to be extra sure to read ALL the fine print, and even with everything going on when you buy a house and how stressed you are, be sure this is your only option. They reel you in with the 0% APR and them slam you with a percentage of your equity at the sale of the house. It is seemingly a way to take advantage of people who are desperately trying to make a decent investment and be somewhat self sufficient at some point in their lives. I'm so uper upset. On a $15,000 loan, I'm paying back $25,123. So you do the math. What a scam. Who would pay back OVER HALF of the intial loan? Unless you have NO other option, that is the stupidest thing someone could do. This is a gross misuse of rearranging numbers to make this deal look good. When in reality you should be prepared to bend over. What a shame

Awesome place. They are helping me buy a condo. Check them out if you are below 80% of the poverty level. They have many programs to help you buy a house, condo or get a cheaper apartment. They build complexes. Awesome people. Amazing we have them.

I agree with those concerned about being denied housing with MHO because of bad credit or no credit. Many low-income families have credit issues brought on by having a low income. How does this help those who cannot help themselves but come to MHO looking for affordable homes in moments of crisis? Asheville rents are rising, most natives are being driven out of their homes due to this fact and denying people based on their credit history is turning your back on them and forcing them to leave a city they grew up in because of money.
My reason for coming here, Question: Why so many 1 bedroom apartments? Me and my family were looking through your website and so many places like Eagle Market are promising 48+ 1 bedroom apartments and only 2-5 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in the entire structure. There are many low-income families in this city looking for affordable housing so I strongly consider re-planning future and under construction developments to include more room for them. I know you have houses available to buy but how about making them rentable? Getting a loan with low-income isn't a fast or easy process in this city anymore.
