Can't believe I didn't remember the McFarland running story from down the road (I was like 5 though) saw it in the theater 3 times, totally made me home sick for CA. The Central Valley does grow the best runners 😉 Thanks for putting us on the map again (besides Mathias) and allowing the movie to be made. I met a close friend and his family of one of the runners at work in Vegas tonight (they saw my nametag town where I was born.)

The film McFarland USA, by Niki Caro, speaks about a coach named Jim White who was fired from a high school football team for abusing his players. He travels to one of the poorest towns in California, McFarland, with his family to get a job as a football coach. The family tries to grow accustomed to the Mexican culture while moving in. A problem that arises quickly was when the family finished eating their dinner at a Mexican restaurant, they head outside and there was a Mexican with cars that was checking out the daughter of Jim White, White was not amused, began to be cautious and wanted to head home as soon as possible; to avoid danger. Which was later said in the film, White thought the group of Mexicans with cars were “gangbangers.”
Jim White eventually wants to make a difference with several McFarland High School students who demonstrated strength in running. With no prior experience to coaching a track team, White plans to positively change the lives of the poor Mexicans who just go to school and straight to field work. At one point, Jose Cardenas was supposedly caught tampering with a vending machine and stealing its money as seen from coach Jenks, but in truth, Jose was getting the stuck change for White. Coach Jenks probably assumed such because the Mexicans are poor in McFarland and figured they would commit suspicious acts to get that they want. Coach Jenks also thought White was using the students as a slave to do his bidding, and says “You’re not helping them, White.” (McFarland 2015) but White hands a cold beverage to Jose for the cross-country track team.
