I used to visit the old location of Hilltop Home with my mother when I was just a boy. My mom volunteered there some and I went with her once/week to see 2-3 main children.
There was one little girl that my mom had a major bond with. The little girl was terminal. She had some condition where her head grew extremely large and grew much faster than the rest of her body as well. I recall some adults talking about her. They used the term water head baby. I still don’t know what that means. Or if it’s even a real condition. I could be saying something politically incorrect right now and if so, i apologize.
I remember being very sad about the girl bc they said she was goi g to die. She couldn’t talk but I talked to her. She cried a little bit and I did too. I didn’t know her, but I didn’t want her to die. I was probably five or six years old maybe seven. I remember suggesting to my mom that she bring her home with us that we could take care of her. Which obviously was a foolish little boy thing to say . But I didn’t know any better. I just didn’t want her to die and leave this world but again I didn’t know what I was talking about. I believe I cried all the way home. That night I told my mom I didn’t t want to go back there ever again. She said OK and I Bebe returned.
I recall my mom going to visit her a lot over the next 3-4 days. She went every day. Mom was sad and had been crying when she came home. I told my mom that I did t like her being sad and crying and maybe she should t go back there after God Takes the little girl to Heaven. Mom told me she thought that was probably a great idea BUT she HAD to go back there. She was on the Board of Directors for Hilltop Home. She also did a lot of fundraising for them over the years.
But overtime, My mom slowly stopped going too. When I think back, I believe that little girl probably died on that 3rd day after my last trip with momma. Just a guess.
After my mom went off the board at hilltop, I didn’t hear a whole lot about it for a long long time. I thought it was in a different location when I was going with mom that would’ve been 45 years ago or more. I actually think it was on a hilltop , but I could be wrong about that. I know it’s a great organization and does great work. If anyone is looking for a great charity to donate to, please consider hilltop home. The level of care and concern for the children at this location is fantastic. This team ensures that the patients are receiving the best care possible. They don’t focus on job descriptions so much as they focus on the needs of the patient. This was our first visit to the facilities in three years and it still looks to be in wonderful condition, very well maintained. To Sam, Jenetta, Melody and the rest of the team, we want to say thank you, we left knowing our grandson was in excellent hands. They truly demonstrate the phase, ā€œA labor of Loveā€.
