Feeding Georgia: A Vital Community Resource

Feeding Georgia, formerly the Georgia Food Bank Association, is a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hunger in the state of Georgia. They operate with a commitment to efficiency and impact, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to maximize their reach and address the complex challenges of hunger within Georgia’s diverse communities.

Mission and Services

The primary mission of Feeding Georgia is to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste across the state. They achieve this through a multifaceted approach, acting primarily as a network of food banks and partner agencies. Instead of operating a large-scale food distribution system themselves, they strategically coordinate efforts, facilitating the distribution of an estimated 118 million pounds of food annually. This translates into providing over 650 million meals to those in need.

Key Activities

  • Food Recovery and Distribution: Feeding Georgia actively partners with grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets, and other businesses to recover surplus food that would otherwise be discarded. This rescued food is then distributed to a network of over 600 partner agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other charitable organizations.
  • Advocacy and Education: Beyond simply distributing food, Feeding Georgia engages in advocacy efforts to address the root causes of hunger. They work to raise awareness about food insecurity and advocate for policies that support access to nutritious food for all Georgians.
  • Resource Development: The organization continuously seeks to expand its resources through fundraising, grant writing, and corporate partnerships. These funds are vital for covering operational costs, purchasing food, and supporting program development.
  • Nutrition Education Programs: Recognizing that access to food is only one piece of the puzzle, Feeding Georgia also offers nutrition education programs to help individuals make informed food choices and lead healthier lives.

Went as a volunteer last night to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. All of the people working there were really inspiring and obviously super compasionate AND passionate about their work. There is such a need for love and care and an end to hunger in Georgia, and this place serves (I believe they said) 80 different areas within our state. They are doing some amazing work, and I would encourage you to volunteer if you haven't already. My husband and I plan to go back again to help out some more sometime.
