I met with a representative to start my claim. He sat me in a room where I handed him whatever paperwork I had and then I sat there quietly for about an hour and a half. No questions about me no explanation about how the process worked. I was told we were doing an intent to file. By the end of the hour and a half, he told me that he’s just going to submit the claim and I’ll gather evidence later. After doing my own research, I found that that is actually not the best way to go about it. Once he submitted my claim, he handed me a copy of it that on first sight I could see at least 3 errors. He told me to go to the VA hospital and start making appointments without any specifications and that was it. I came back about a week later with questions. I saw the same representative who did not recognize me and did not remember anything about my claim. He told me I can go online and find the forms to fill out and then bring them back to him. It took me a while to navigate through all the different forms but I finally found the right forms, filled them out and brought them back only to find out that the office was closed for 12 days. I’m sure that was a planned closing and yet this representative did not think it was important to let me know they’d be closed when I last saw him. I submitted the forms on my own. I did not hear back from the VA for about a month and I tried calling the DAV to maybe get some help. No one answers the phone. This is when they are open again. I try again the next day and the day after and finally I get someone on the phone who tells me that since I submitted those forms on my own, they cannot help me. I am now sitting at 3 months since I started my claim, stuck on step 3 of the process. No one answering the phone again. I did not know much about how this process worked when I started but I assumed that there would be more support from the DAV especially since they self proclaim that they are the best at getting veterans a rating. My experience here has made me feel like the people here do not care and the service I received seemed completely unprofessional. You are better off skipping going to this office and just learning how to submit your claim on your own because if your experience is anything like mine, you will probably end up doing it all on your own anyway.

As a recently separated VET who was wrongfully discharged, I have been extremely lucky and thankful for these gentlemen and women who help the community. If it were not for them I would not be where I am today, though I am still struggling. Between the DAV team and Nancy Smith at as the VA Rep in Jacksonville, I have been very blessed with a wonderful team. I HIGHLY encourage ALL veterans (regardless of disability, discharge, etc.) to check them out. Just bring your DD214, and a good attitude and they will find someway to assist you.

Great people working there. Was kind of crazy because they were in the middle of a move and renovation. Our appointment was in Jacksonville (and we weren't told about the move) but it was okay. Quick drive over to highway 107 next to Gregory Polaris and we were helped out.

Valuable resource for Vets (active, separated, or retired). Go here to get info on va disability before seperating or retiring! The volunteer staff is excellent and they want to help you to obtain your earned VA benefits. Even if you are active duty and new to the military, stop in and listen to what they have to say. "Get it documented and in your records". It will help you later on.

The DAV team was extremely helpful to my husband and I as we both were able to review our records with them in a painless process with them. They truly do work on behalf of the military member!
