I was excited about coming to the archives to do family research. It’s a very nice building and I was happy that records were easily accessible. I was less happy with my experience trying to access those records. The lady at the desk over-explained the master index, sat at the research computer, and wouldn’t move. She spoke to me condescendingly, acting as if I was going to look at top secret information in a public archive and touch books with hands covered in jam. (For the record, I have archival experience) I said “It is so nice the books are all searchable online while some archives are not and take some extra effort. But I do enjoy looking through physical records.” She cut me off and gestured to the computer. In a condescending way and tone told me, “Other archives do things differently. Let me tell you about what WE do”. As if she hadn’t already been doing that for the last 10 minutes. It’s not a difficult computer search. She also mentioned the archives budget as if i somehow insulted something. That confused me. I was happy records were digitized, but I guess she thought I insulted their facility? I have no idea. She kept talking and talking. I was flabbergasted that she wouldn’t leave me alone so I could start my research. I was trying to be calm and polite and wait it out but I got impatient. She even questioned me when I tried to get her to understand that I wanted to finally start researching. I said in a firm voice this time that I was going to look at the online records, meander through the family history books available, and then leave. She asked “What do you mean ‘meander around’”  I am thinking “What do YOU mean what do I mean meander around?” I finally raised my voice to her in frustration after she once again mentioned the precious “master index” for the 100th time that she finally left: “I KNOW there’s a master index!!”  By then I was fed up and just left. I was so angry and confused at this ridiculous situation. I don’t know why I was singled out with this mistrust. She really didn’t want me looking at anything. Other reviews suggest a good experience. I am still trying to wrap my head around the whole insane exchange.

It's a pretty interesting place to visit. The building is really cool in my opinion, and the history they teach you about is also interesting.
