Mission and Core Activities

The organization's fundamental purpose revolves around constructing, repairing, and improving residential housing through volunteer labor and community partnerships. Crucially, Habitat For Humanity operates under the philosophy that housing is a human right, striving to empower families rather than merely provide temporary solutions. Their approach typically involves partnerships with low-income families who contribute sweat equity (volunteer hours) alongside donations of materials and funds.

Key activities undertaken by the Morgan County chapter include:

  • Building Programs: Direct construction of new, energy-efficient homes for qualifying families within the community.
  • Repair and Rehabilitation Programs: Assisting homeowners with essential home repairs, particularly focusing on accessibility modifications for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
  • ReStore Operations: Running a successful thrift store (often referred to as the Habitat ReStore) which sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, and home improvement items. Proceeds from this store significantly fund the organization's building programs.
  • Financial Assistance Programs: Offering interest-free loans to homeowners who have participated in Habitat builds, enabling them to obtain their homes through a sustainable homeownership path.

They actively recruit volunteers from the Morgan County area and beyond, offering opportunities for individuals and groups to contribute their time and skills directly to home construction, ReStore operations, administrative tasks, fundraising events, and neighborhood improvements. Prices were extremely expensive, indeed! Donated items had retail pieces. Honestly, items were bit more expensive than retail price. After I left I had to pick my jaw off the floor. I was in total shock!!!

I drove several miles to go to this restore only to find a note on the door that said closed due to weather. What bad weather? A few scattered snow flurries ( if you would even call it that) is not bad weather. Seriously!! At 3PM the parking lot was bone dry. Im extremely disappointed. Decatur Restore was the 3rd store I'd been to today. Friday Jan 12, 2018 doors locked at all 3 locations.
1st I wemt to the restore in Franklin TN - it was closed for bad weather also (completely understandable there) so I drove to the restore in Athens AL. Nope! Its gone! Note on door says "permitly closed" no longer excepting donations... Okay... So I drove further south to Decatur AL only to find another note posted on the door...
For now on I will call the store before I go and suggest this to everyone!!
Lesson learned for this girl. Hope your experience is better than mine.

How can anyone honestly not like this place? There's random amazing stuff from time to time. It's one of those places you go when you've got an ongoing project list--and just maybe you'll find something you need. We've got a couple of fixer-upper bookshelves for under $20, a giant desk for $35, light fixtures and ceiling fans, spray paint, hinges, drawer pulls.
