They care. As a senior with disabilities and a myriad of issues regarding a residential lease, not knowing where to turn- they reached out to me immediately. Attorney Bill Gardner was assigned to my case. It was a tremendous relief that there is an agency to represent you and guide you through a stressful situation. Bill was communicative, personable and knowledgeable as he helped to navigate the treacherous landscape of unscrupulous landlords. Grateful they exist. Thank you, Bill.

I waited for approximately forty minutes only to be met with quite possibly the rudest, most condescending representative with whom I have ever spoken. She made it very clear that she had no desire to be on the phone with me, outright informing me that she did not have much time on the phone because of how busy the hotline was. I only asked a few questions, and she seemed irritated with every one of them. Perhaps the attorneys are better, but she made for a terrible representation of the call center.

The Council on Aging of Union County gave me the number when I asked for help writing my mom’s will. They told me free clinics run every 6-8 weeks. I had a simple question - how do I find out about the free clinics? Do I get called or emailed when one has been planned? I was on hold 15 minutes, then I got intentionally talked over the entire time I tried finding out if I needed to be calling. The rude and condescending woman also insulted me for not knowng IN ADVANCE legal procedures for calling a “helpline,” inferring that she is an attorney NOT a “helpline” or “public service.” Which I was supposed to know in advance of calling. Why bother calling for INFORMATION about obtaining legal help if I’m supposed to start out already knowing? People answering a HELPline need to be trained or taught in childhood how to HELP and how to care about PEOPLE.

Who is paying this woman? After starting out totally rude, she informed me that the clinics are held every 3-4 months, and calculated impromptu in her head, based on my mention of being given her number in early March, that the next one would be in July. Not where or how, just when. AND only my mother can call for further information unless I obtain power of attorney!

I do not recommend anyone to call. Just google it and hope you don’t contact scammers who especially like to trick people like my 79-year-old mother. Virtual muggers of the elderly have hacked her accounts multiple times, sometimes because they are advertised as “help” or “services” on internet search results, top of the page! I know a local elderly woman on anti-depressants after having her whole life savings hacked by googling “help” agencies. And so we find that the “legal” helpers don’t steal; they merely do NOTHING.
