I recently completed a 72 day gap year semester North Carolina Outward Bound course that took place in Patagonia, the Everglades national park, and the Blue Ridge mountains. In the three months that I was on course, I was challenged and pushed harder than ever before in my young adult life. Through crossing a glacier in Argentina, to paddling for 24 hours straight in the Everglades, to rock climbing and white water canoeing in the mountains of North Carolina, I was pushed out of my comfort zone every day. I became extremely close with my ten crew mates, and every instructor I had on course. Now as I am adjusting back into life not living in the woods, I notice changes within myself on a daily basis, from the way I approach conflict, to the way I think about myself. I have a lot to thank Outward Bound for, but in particular I dedicate my new found work ethic, confidence, and ability to deal with difficult situations to NCOBS and will never forget the endless memories I made while on course.

Did a mini course through school for 10 days in Nov 1971. Hiking, obstacle courses, rock climbing & rappelling, baking granola, 20 mile group trail hike & bushwhacking—students only (no gps! Just a magnetic compass, map & description of desired destinations) culminating with a 2 night solo and then hike back to camp for the going away party later that evening. Incredible, unforgettable experience. Shout out to Chip, our leader.

Took a NCOBS trip as part of a WWC class. During this time in the woods I was harassed by my classmates and bullied by a facilitator who wouldn’t let us continue walking until I drank all my soup. I didn’t I poured it out because trying to bully and force feed adults is insane. Would not recommend at all it’s scary you don’t promote a safe space for everyone just harassment.

July 1986 I had the greatest experiences ever when I was at home I did end up on my final Trek out off of the Appalachian trail end up in the hospital from numerous bee stings but when I was there I experienced everything and I loved it all, and if I had the experience to go back and teach and teach kids not to turn out like a bad kid you turn out to be a good person and end up enjoying life this is the place to go. You learn to achieve and not fail. My father Jeter McKinley was a instructor and I would like the opportunity to be able to come sprinkle his ashes off the side of one of our favorite climbs.
