I appreciate the good Ojai Raptor Center (ORC) does. I appreciate their accessibility and their willingness to help injured and sick birds. What I am disappointed with ORC is their lack of communication as to what they will do with a bird if they deem it “unsuitable” for rehabilitation. I recently transported a Raven to ORC that had been cared for by an elderly woman for 9 months. She rescued the Raven after finding it injured. She You Tubed how to set an injured wing and nursed the bird back to health. While the bird never regained the ability to fly, it appeared happy and content and pain free. The raven could hop around and flutter from the backs of one chair to the other on her patio. The bird was capable of and enjoyed bathing itself and was able to interact with the woman and learned to say “hi” to the woman. The woman understood that Ravens are social creatures and would benefit from being with other birds. She reached out to ORC and relayed the story of “Jazzy” and felt comfortable entrusting ORC with her life. Within a day of her arrival, ORC put Jazzy down stating she was not suitable for rehabilitation. In all the conversations the woman had with ORC she was never told there was a possibility the bird would be evaluated for “life worthiness.” Had she known euthanasia was likely, she would have never entrusted ORC with Jazzy’s well being. When I dropped the bird off I was told there is a sanctuary in Santa Barbara that Jazzy would probably go to. To me, sanctuary means a safe place to live regardless of your abilities. If an animal is not in pain and can eat, drink, clean itself and interact with others, its life has value. I’m very disappointed with ORC’s communication skills. In July of 2022 I asked ORC to help with a burrowing owl that was found tangling in fishing line in the summer heat of Kern County. It was definitely fatigued and worn out by the time I collected it. I asked ORC if I should give it water to hydrate it. I was told “absolutely not!” I was told to just bring it as quickly as possible and they will take care of it. I first encountered the owl at 5pm and was able to drop the bird off at 10:30pm. The bird was dead by morning. I have nursed 3 baby birds (finches) that were so young they didn’t even have feathers. The first thing I did was drip water with a syringe into their mouths to get them hydrated. 5 weeks later, the birds were set free and flew away. I believe had I hydrated that owl, it would have had a much better chance to live. I understand I do not know everything about the requirements and restrictions placed on animal rescues, but I think ORC can do better. I think ORC needs to take a step back and reevaluate it’s evaluation process and give the public bringing birds in more information. Jazzy the Raven was happy, healthy and not in distress. This place is wonderful! And the people who work here are absolutely fantastic!!! We found an injured owl being attacked by crows and hawks; my husband protected it while I spent an hour desperately calling various rescue places, trying to reach a live person. I finally contacted Camarillo Fire Dispatch, who very kindly gave me the number for the Ojai Raptor Center. Grace answered immediately and then spent considerable time reassuring me and coaching me through the whole process of how to safely capture it, transport it, exactly where to go etc. She was SO incredibly kind and patient, and made sure I understood the whole procedure. We brought the owl in as directed and were warmly and efficiently received. All involved personnel wore the appropriate personal protective equipment. (PPE). They whisked our owl away and did a preliminary exam looking for signs of avian flu, then carried it safely away to be further examined and treated. Another woman spoke with us about what measures they recommend we take regarding washing our clothing etc. in the extremely unlikely event of contamination (we captured it as directed, in a safe manner). We were SO impressed by the entire process and certainly by the excellent personnel. We can't thank them enough!

The raptor center is a wounderful place that takes care and does the rehabilitation of birds in the area and takes care of all of them quite well. They do wounderful work for both the birds and the community.

Great people doing great work. Be aware that there is no sign on the road, you have to turn in at the recycling center. Also, at least on Sundays, there is a locked gate and someone will need to let you in.

Found an adolescent turkey vulture with a wing. I got it local care and drove several hours to bring the injured bird to them. Made me feel like I was a burden for showing up. Not sure why but it felt a lot like they didn't want me there. Keeping a 3 because even though they're kind of....rude? They do take care of the animals and that's the point. It'd be cool if I felt good doing it though and not like some b hole that's an inconvenience to them. This happened over a year ago, I just keep getting emails from them and it bothered me enough today.

Excellent rehabilitation center for injured Raptors. Most are released to the wild without imprinting on humans. The "community ambassadors" are raptors that were too badly injured to be able to be released and survive naturally. Please support this organization with donations if you can!!

On Saturday morning we found an injured fox, and very quickly they arranged to have a transporter come out to our home to pick him up, so he could be cared for properly. I hope he is recovering. I am so grateful for the generosity and selflessness of the ORC. Thank you for all you do every day.
